NGSS Discussion

Let's use this page for discussion of the Next Generation Science Standards. We have some members with in-depth knowledge of the NGSS -- Laura Ritter and Beth Kubitskey. Pick their brains.

I'll start with a question for everyone. I copied and pasted this from the NGSS:

From a practical standpoint, the Framework notes that engineering and technology provide  opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of science by applying their developing  scientific knowledge to the solution of practical problems. Both positions converge on the  powerful idea that by integrating technology and engineering into the science curriculum  teachers can empower their students to use what they learn in their everyday lives.

Do you see this new engineering component changing how physics is learned in your classroom? If your answer is yes, comment on what you envision, or ask more questions for us to consider.

I noticed healthy emphasis on the design process in the new engineering component. Gary Abud has some great design methods he shared at the last DMAPT meeting we had at Grosse Pointe North HS. Perhaps we should take a deeper look at how we can apply those design processes soon.

  1. I think this could mean that large-scale design and build projects which cover multiple units will replace some stand-alone labs. I see myself scaling down some of my bigger labs, merging some others and replacing some labs with these kind of projects.
